Alex Springer

ALEX SPRINGER (Director/Répétiteur) co-creator, performer, teacher, and video artist, is currently an Assistant Professor of Contemporary Dance Practice at the University of Florida. His choreographic projects with Xan Burley have been presented by the American Dance Festival, Jacob’s Pillow Inside/Out, Center for Performance Research, Danspace Project’s DraftWork, Movement Research at the Judson Church, and the 92Y, among others. They have received notable residencies and awards including the Marble House Project, Jacob’s Pillow Research Fellowship, CPR’s Technical & Production Residency, University Settlement Artist Residency, UF College of the Arts Scholarship Enhancement Fund awards, Research Incentive Awards, and Work-in-Process Award. They have also been commissioned to create dances for over 15 schools and repertory companies. Recently, they co-authored a paper with Dr. Elif Akçali that was published in the Journal of Dance Education and presented at a National Dance Education Organization special topics conference. Burley, Springer, and their creative team were selected as one of 7 international artists for AIR Taipei’s artist residency program in Taiwan this summer. Springer was selected as one of UF’s Global Fellows for 2024. He was a member of Doug Varone and Dancers from 2008-17 and has also worked with Alexandra Beller, Jeanine Durning, Adriane Fang, Angie Hauser, Heidi Henderson, Donnell Oakley, and the Metropolitan Opera Ballet, among others. During his tenure with the Varone company, he acted as the rehearsal director, company manager, and has maintained engagements as a video editor, archivist, and répétiteur. As a video artist he has worked on projects with Yanira Castro, Juliana May, Michelle Boulé, and served as the Administrative Fellow in Digital Archives for the Dance Studies Association.
